Market History

The Cross, traditional symbol of a Burgh’s right to hold an open air market, stood in Queensberry Square, Dumfries, for hundreds of years. The town was probably granted the right to hold a market when it became a Royal Burgh around 1188. Early in the 19th century the whole town centre was awash with stalls on market day.
The practice fell out of fashion in later years but was revived in 1999. Dumfries Town Centre Market follows a long established tradition, operating out of Queensberry Square and an area of the High Street adjacent to prominent retail outlets such as Marks & Spencer, Boots, Burtons and W H Smith.
Held every Saturday, the market offers a wide variety of goods ranging from the traditional butcher and fruit and vegetable stalls to antiques and collectibles, clothing, bags and gifts, which sit alongside local businesses working in arts and crafts and offering local produce.
